"Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the British Empire"
with Subhadra Das
When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote A Study In Scarlet — the very first Sherlock Holmes story — in 1886, he wrote an international story. By flagging down a hansom cab in London, Holmes managed to solve a crime that stretched for thousands of miles across the Atlantic and the North American continent. Over the following decades, the greatest detective to never have lived would strive to bring order to chaos in his home city — the metropole and the beating heart of the British Empire. Despite solving crimes with their roots as far afield as Australia, the British Raj and South Africa, Holmes himself barely ever traveled further than a train ride out of London (and the one time he did, it did not end well). In this talk, historian Subhadra Das will share what she has discovered from close readings of the exploits of the world's most famous detective, and his equally famous creator. She will uncover how the detective story, as we know it, has always been an imperial story.
Subhadra Das is a historian who writes about science and society, specialising in the history of race and eugenics.
