''Watching the Super-rich: The Justification of Wealth Inequality on Television" with Phillipa Carr
Summary
The UK is framed as a meritocracy where social mobility is achievable for people with abilities who work hard. However, practices such as inheritance maintain wealth inequality and limit social mobility. In this talk, we will explore how entertainment documentaries present extreme wealth as attainable to all yet present the super-rich as extraordinary. Within the programmes, talk about individual psychology is used to present the super-rich as deserving of their status. While reality style programming is generally viewed as entertainment, this format is also a form of political communication that presents wealth distribution as an individual issue.
