Among the myriad of inventions that have come from Scotland (pedal bikes, RADAR, that wheel in Falkirk) none impacts our daily lives quite so much as the National Health service. Starting in 1912 it was Scotland that made the direct medical care of its citizens a public responsibility. The story tells the tale of Scotland as a whole: genius innovators, community spirit caring for the poor, the English taking the credit, and all of it bought and paid for with whiskey. The story of the beginnings of the NHS can inform us today on everything from the natural environment, digital IP, and even the Preventing Homelessness law gone into effect this year. 

Bio

Dr. Andrew Johnstone is the host of Seemingly Unrelated a podcast all about the unexpected stories of the everyday that explain why it is that we do, what we do. He has held lectureships at the University of Glasgow and King's College London as well as an Associate Fellowship with the Royal Historical Society. Currently, he is working on his upcoming book  Revolutionary Archives: The Radical Act of Preservation in the Age of Disinformation set for release in 2028.

What if I don't drink alcohol?

No problem at all! Pints of Knowledge is all about the ideas and the community, not the drinks. You’re welcome to enjoy a soft drink, coffee, or whatever you prefer. The focus is on creating a relaxed, social atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable

Can I attend without a ticket?

Tickets must be purchased online prior to the event. With our limited capacity at each venue we can't let people in without a ticket.

Is there food available?

Yes, there is always the option to purchase food at our events.

Can I get my ticket refunded?

We issue full ticket refunds if you have requested 7 days before the event. Any requests after will be at the discretion of the event organiser.

Is the event dog friendly?

Yes, Pints of Knowledge is dog friendly. We request that dogs are on a leash and well behaved. If there's persistent disturbance you will be asked to leave.
