"What the Land Remembers but Can’t Say: Colonialism, Ecological Crisis and the Possibility of a Life Future"" with Liam Farrell

Summary

What if the land could remember? Lough Neagh — the largest freshwater lake in Britain and Ireland — is facing a deepening ecological crisis. Its story might seem a long way from Manchester, but it opens onto shared histories of land, property and colonialism that connect Ireland and Britain. Starting with contemporary struggles over Lough Neagh, this talk explores how historical knowledge and ideas of “improvement”, “waste”, “freedom” and “possession” have shaped relationships between people and the land — and how these histories continue to structure ecological crises in the present. Could looking differently at our recent past help us imagine a different and more democratic “Life Future” for the islands of Ireland, Britain and the relationships between them?
