''Taste, Tinsel and Bah Humbug Urbanism: How Christmas Lights Illuminate Britain’s Class Divides'' with Steve Millington

Summary

This talk examines the rise of household Christmas light displays as a festive practice in the UK and a vivid site of contemporary class conflict. While media narratives often frame displays as excessive, tasteless or environmentally irresponsible, residents describe them as acts of generosity, pride and community care, “organised chaos” that brings joy, marks belonging and creates memories. Drawing on voices from Sheffield and Manchester, the talk will explore how illumination becomes a battleground of aesthetics and morality, but also a form of inclusive placemaking rooted in conviviality, creativity and everyday efforts to brighten neighbourhood life.
