"The Rise of Global Authoritarianism: What Should We Do?" with James Pattison
Summary
Democracy is under pressure worldwide. Democratic freedoms are being eroded in the United States and beyond, whilst authoritarian powers such as China are extending their global influence. But what are our moral responsibilities in response? Do we have a duty to confront authoritarianism beyond our borders? Are economic sanctions and increased military spending morally justified in response? Can we defend liberal democratic values without compromising them? And should confronting authoritarianism take priority over tackling global poverty and climate change? This talk explores the urgent ethical dilemmas raised by global authoritarianism and what we ought to do about them

James Pattison is Professor of Politics at the University of Manchester and co-editor of the Journal of Global Security Studies.
