Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train

The Pioneer Tunnel is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit historic educational tourist attraction welcoming visitors since 1962. We offer two different tours. Our Coal Mine tour takes you on a battery-powered open mine train 1800 feet straight into the side of Mahanoy Mountain to educate you about anthracite coal mining and the different gangways inside the tunnel. Our other tour is a 3/4-mile journey behind a 1927 narrow-gauge steam locomotive that takes you around the Mahanoy Mountain to learn about strip mining, bootleg mining, and the Centralia mine fire.
