Description
Evening Concerts in Christ Church Cathedral
4 in a Bar 8pm - In the first of two events in the stunning surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin’s own renowned close harmony group presents a varied and diverse programme constructed around the life and work of Charles Villiers Stanford (1852–1924), Irish-born organist, teacher and composer. In the centenary year of his death, the vocal quartet will perform a newly-commissioned work by Irish composer Rhona Clarke, which focuses on Stanford’s legacy in a thought-provoking way.
Messiaen: Diptyque and Quartet for the End of Time 9:30pm
Mia Cooper, Violin
Martin Johnson, Cello
Fergal Caulfield, Piano and Organ
John Finucane, Clarinet
This late-night event in the atmospheric surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral features four of Ireland’s leading instrumentalists in a programme of works by French composer Olivier Messiaen. The Quartet for the End of Time, composed while Messiaen was a prisoner of war in 1941, is one of his most hauntingly beautiful and other-worldly compositions. It is preceded by the organ work Diptyque, whose second section prefigures the music of the quartet.
