The 2024 Festival opens in style, with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the death of Dublin native and celebrated composer Charles Villiers Stanford, featuring one of his greatest works, the profound and beautiful Stabat Mater. Percy Whitlock’s Symphony for Organ and Orchestra completes the progamme. This hidden gem of the repertoire receives its first performance in Ireland, with renowned organist Daniel Moult taking the demanding solo part. A stellar group of vocal soloists joins the Festival Chorus and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra under the baton of Artistic Director David Leigh, all in the beautiful surroundings of the Church of the Immaculate Conception (Adam and Eve’s), Merchants’ Quay.

In the first of two events in the stunning surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin’s own renowned close harmony group presents a varied and diverse programme constructed around the life and work of Charles Villiers Stanford (1852–1924), Irish-born organist, teacher and composer.
In the centenary year of his death, the vocal quartet will perform a newly-commissioned work by Irish composer Rhona Clarke, which focuses on Stanford’s legacy in a thought-provoking way

This late-night event in the atmospheric surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral features four of Ireland’s leading instrumentalists in a programme of works by French composer Olivier Messiaen. The Quartet for the End of Time, composed while Messiaen was a prisoner of war in 1941, is one of his most hauntingly beautiful and other-worldly compositions. It is preceded by the organ work Diptyque, whose second section prefigures the music of the quartet.

Lunchtime recital by Geoffrey Webber @ Sandford Parish Church, Ranelagh, Dublin 6 (In partnership with Summer Music at Sandford) Distinguished scholar and recitalist Geoffory Webber presents a varied programme on the fine three manual instrument in Sandford, recently restored by Trevor Crowe. Geoffrey held various posts in Oxford and Cambridge Universities, latterly as Precentor of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

‘Cases for Ornament: Historic organs from Grinling Gibbons to Father Smith’
While the sound and maintenance of historic organs is a prime concern in churches, makers have always put great efforts into how they look, adding a visual element to their enjoyment, in historic settings. This talk highlights outstanding examples in these islands, from the gilded sculpture of Restoration court to the heyday of Victorian organ. Adrian Le Harivel, former Curator of British Art, National Gallery of Ireland, has spent over twenty years lecturing and researching on links between art and music, and is currently Emeritus tutor of Visual Culture at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
2pm Edward Higginbottom in conversation with Andrew Johnstone
Edward Higginbottom enjoys a distinguished international reputation as scholar, performer and director. Under his direction the choir of New College, Oxford acquired an international reputation and toured and recorded widely. Edward is a particular authority on the music of the French Baroque, about which he has written widely. He will bring this expertise to bear in masterclass and concert on the Gotze and Gwynn instrument in the public theatre of Trinity College. This is preceeded by a discussion with Andrew Johnstone, Pipeworks committee member, lecturer in music at TCD, and himself a distinguished organist and scholar.
