Piri Piri Nights
Portugal is a place that’s very close to our hearts, we’ve stomped the streets of Lisbon and Porto on more than one occasion and more importantly, since we were nippers, we’ve spent many weeks on the Algarve’s Jurassic coast. Our parents spend months there every year and it’s somewhat of a home from home.
Traditional Algarvian food is rustic to say the least, typically grilled fish or meat with a side of carbs and something green. If you get away from the tourists inland you’ll be treated to hearty stews of wild boar and Bacalhau, likely for less than your morning Starbucks back home! It’s also worth noting they REALLY don’t get the whole veggie thing (but don’t worry veggies, we’ve got you!).
Down the back streets you’ll find what we are looking for… Piri Piri. This spicy little number has its roots firmly in Mozambique and was introduced into Portugal by hungry traders in the early sixties. It’s since exploded globally due to a certain ‘cheeky’ restaurant chain and despite becoming firm crowd fave in the UK, there’s nothing like the real thing.
The essence of good Portuguese Piri Piri is simplicity, no menu to peruse, just spicy bbq’d chicken, a simple tomato salad and chips or rice. You’ll invariably be sat on a red plastic chair overlooking a scruffy car park and yet as far as gastronomic experiences go (for me at least), it doesn’t get much better. The cold Sagres and change from €15 helps of course.
Piri Piri Nights by Pit Kitchen is our homage to those memories. We‘ll be going a little off-piste as always, in part due to the fact a simple tomato salad in the UK in February just won’t hit the same, but also because it’s fun!
Crucially we want to keep the price as low as possible, Piri Piri should be for all and the last thing we want to do is try to fancy it up too much. Expect no frills communal dining and plenty of banging grub cooked over the fire. We’ll even let you bring your own plonk!
