Rights vs. Risks
Service providers often have significant influence over the lives of the individuals they support. Our role is to ensure the safety of the people we serve while also respecting their right to experience a dignity of risk. In this discussion, we will explore the following topics:
- Supporting individuals in making meaningful choices
Understanding habilitation as the process of teaching skills to help individuals live as independently as possible
Examining the advantages and disadvantages of habilitation
- Addressing challenges such as:
- What happens when we believe their choice may not be the best one?
- How can we ensure their safety?
- What if they don’t fully understand the potential consequences of their decisions?
This online course is part of Pivot Point’s ongoing education series for CLBC agency partners, individuals receiving services, and caregivers.
