Adult Community Training - Rights vs. Risks
Rights vs. Risks
This presentation explores the complex balance between individual rights, autonomy, dignity, and safety for people with developmental disabilities.
It examines how concerns about risk can sometimes lead to restrictive practices, overprotection, or decisions that unintentionally limit a person’s opportunities, choices, and quality of life.
Participants will consider how behavioural assessment and intervention can be used not simply to reduce behaviours of concern, but to understand their function, identify environmental influences, and develop person-centred, strengths-based, least-restrictive supports.
The presentation will highlight ethical decision-making, supported choice, positive risk-taking, and the importance of balancing duty of care with the individual’s right to self-determination and meaningful participation in their own lives.
This online course is part of Pivot Point’s ongoing education series for CLBC agency partners, individuals receiving services, and caregivers.
This event will take place on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 from 9am - 12 pm PST / 10am - 1 pm MST
