Life on the Edge: An Evening Talk with Gem Simmons
Life on the Edge: An Evening Talk with Gem Simmons
Need help?
Do you know who to call if you find an injured marine animal or what incredible species are lurking beneath the waves? Ever wondered how we rescue an enormous whale or what it is like to wrangle a seal? This talk will highlight the roles of marine conservation organisations in North Wales and demonstrate how we can all contribute to help protect and conserve the species we share our wild spaces with.
Growing up in North Wales, Gem always had a passion for the outdoors and felt more at home in the water than on land. While nurturing a love for wild swimming and outdoor adventure, Gem's wildlife encounters ignited a passion for marine life. This lead to a career in marine mammal research and rescue as a marine biologist. Witnessing ever-increasing threats to marine life spurred the creation of a non-profit organisation, which combined her love for wild spaces with hands-on conservation. It highlights the potential for successful citizen science methodologies and showcases how people-powered conservation from outdoor communities can ultimately save our species on the edge.
Gem will take us on a deep dive beneath the waves to discover what is happening along our coasts. She will help us learn more about the organisations on the frontline of Welsh marine conservation efforts as well as how to get involved. The talk will offer a behind-the-scenes look at some of our famous critical incidents and might even inspire you to train as a marine mammal medic with British Divers Marine Life Rescue!
