SCENE NIGHT is back at Playhouse East. Friday 25 September, doors 7pm.
Once a month a handful of writers, actors and directors bring a short piece to The Playhouse and try it out in front of an audience. Some of it is brand new. Some of it is a scene from something bigger. Some of it is a first draft that needs to be heard out loud before anyone knows what it is yet.
After each piece James Alexandrou, Playhouse East's Artistic Director, hosts a conversation and the feedback comes from the room. There's no industry in the room: it's a supportive night for artists ranging from old professionals to first timers, and a rare look at how acting, writing and directing actually get made. Work that started here has gone on to the Arcola, the BBC and Amazon Studios. ALL ARE WELCOME.
This month's line-up
- The Mixing Hour by Adam El Hagar. 1989, Los Angeles. Producer Sal is fighting to make a record that could define his career, but his volatile punk-rock band are proving increasingly impossible to control.
- Half a Sorrow by Callan McCarthy, directed by Izzy Parriss. "You help the loud parts of my mind go quiet." A yearning, poetic and combative three-hander: the unexpected queer love story between footballer Liza, retail employee Bea and her Shadow, as Bea tries to outrun her past to reach for her future.
- In the Eye of the Beholder by Karina Wiedman. Two strangers meet in the middle of an art heist in Soho. There's a million dollars between them. Will they walk away with the cash or lose everything over the true worth of art?
More to be announced. Line-up subject to change.
