They’re Just Small Town (Northern) Lads follows a mixed-race teenage boy and his best friend as he navigates boyhood, and the pressures of growing up in a small Northern town.

Surrounded by very different models of masculinity, from a gentle Windrush Era Grandfather to a volatile father - he quickly learns there’s a shape in small towns he’s expected to fit.

Blending comedy, sharp storytelling and Y2K nostalgia, this autobiographical solo show explores boyhood, masculinity, race - and the moments boys must decide what kind of men they will become.
