EVERYTHING FLOWS: BERNADETTE KIELY, SIOBHÁN MCDONALD and PAUL MOSSE

Pembroke College, the Cambridge Group for Irish Studies and Cambridge University Library are delighted to welcome three of Ireland's leading artists, Bernadette Kiely, Siobhán McDonald and Paul Mosse, to discuss their own work and the legacy of their friend, renowned painter, Barrie Cooke. Chaired by Mark Wormald, curator of Living Water: Poetry, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers, (currently showing at the University Library and at Pembroke College), the event will feature illustrated presentations, discussion, and reflections on the state of Ireland's waters and art. Bernadette, Siobhán and Paul will be delighted to take questions from the audience.

The event will begin at 5.00 pm and end at 7.15 pm in Pembroke College's new auditorium in Dolby Quarter, which you will find by crossing Trumpington Street from Pembroke's Porter's Lodge via the new pedestrian crossing and heading along the street towards the former United Reform Church -- now our auditorium. Then follow the signs. All are welcome to this free public event but please register to reserve your seat. 

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Bernadette Kiely is a visual artist based on the quayside of the river Nore in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. Known for her powerful portrayals of the fragility of the natural and physical world, Bernadette draws particularly on her experiences as a child growing up on the quayside in Carrick on Suir, Co. Tipperary, where she witnessed many flood events which have continued throughout her life as an adult living on the river Nore in Co. Kilkenny. The effects of flooding and decay on land and human lives have been an enduring theme in her practice for over 25 years expanding in scale and intensity along with the urgency of the present climate emergency. Bernadette is represented by Taylor Galleries, Dublin and is a member of Aosdana, the governmental body of artists who are deemed by their peers to make a continuing significant contribution to the arts in Ireland.

Siobhán McDonald’s practice draws attention to contemporary topics dealing with air, breath and atmospheric phenomena, weaving scientific knowledge into her art in a poetic and thoughtful manner. Siobhán McDonald was born in New York. She lives and works in Dublin. Siobhán works with natural materials, withdrawing them from their cycles of generation, growth and decay. This process gives form to a range of projects which consider our place on Earth in the context of geological time. Her artworks make use of natural phenomena and technologies to stage poetic and philosophical engagements between people and their natural world. Beginning with a specific site of investigation, Siobhán weaves diverse narratives into visual stories, often inviting nature itself to participate in the creative process. Her research-driven practice employs a distinctive artistic language to express intangible processes, utilising painting, drawing, film, and sound.

Paul Mosse was born in Ireland in 1946 and was educated at Chelsea College of Art, London. He has exhibited extensively across the world; numerous awards include Carroll’s Prize in Living Art Exhibition (1968); Boise Scholarship, British School at Rome (1969); and the Irish American Cultural Institute O’Malley Art Award (2011-12). He was elected a member of Aosdána in 2008 and received the prestigious Savills prize in 2018.
