Drawing on more than 40 years of combined experience across the gallery, publishing and professional photography worlds, Simon and Richard will offer guidance on creative direction, project development, editing, and how to position your work within today’s fine-art landscape.
Participants are encouraged to bring working prints or simple digital proofs for use in practical exercises, sequencing sessions, and group critique.

About Simon
Simon Roberts (b.1974) is a visual artist based in Brighton, UK. Widely recognised for his large-format, tableaux photographs of the British landscape, his practice also encompasses video, text and installation work, which together, interrogate notions of identity and belonging, and the complex relationship between history, place and culture.
He has exhibited widely, and his photographs reside in major public and private collections, including the George Eastman House, Deutsche Börse Art Collection and Victoria & Albert Museum. In 2010 he was commissioned as the official British Election Artist by the House of Commons Works of Art Committee. He is the author of several monographs including Motherland (2007), We English (2009), Pierdom (2013), Merrie Albion (2017) and After London (2025).
He is represented by Flowers Gallery.
About Richard
Richard Kalman is the owner and founder of the Crane Kalman Brighton gallery. With a family background in the art world and in modern British painting in particular, Richard branched out and opened his own gallery in Brighton in 2005 specialising in contemporary photography.
The gallery has established a reputation for providing a platform to showcase the work of mostly up-and-coming, young British and some International artists. The gallery has held solo exhibitions by artists such as Polly Borland, Simon Roberts, Jane Hilton, Tim Flach and the late Michael Ormerod, as well as the work of international photographers such as Terry Richardson, Joseph Szabo, Karine Laval and Hans van der Meer.
Richard also continues to work with emerging young photographers through the annually held Cream Graduate Showcase exhibition. He lectures in Professional Practice at Universities giving advice to students on photography and careers in the art world, and hosts portfolio review sessions for BA and MA students. He also works with professional photographers to provide career development mentorship and review sessions both through one-to-one sessions as well as at various photography festivals and photo meets.
