Rhythms of Resistance
POW is excited to welcome three vibrant musical spirits playing together for the very first time!
Jessica Lauren - keyboards, vocals
Isobella Burnham - bass, vocals
Cleo Savva - percussion, vocals
A coming-together of three brilliant musicians from different corners of the diverse UK jazz scene.
Isobella Burnham (she/her) is a bassist, vocalist and composer based in East London. She grew up in Barbados and that’s where she soaked up the rich musical culture and started exploring Caribbean rhythms in her music. When Isobella moved back to London she immersed herself in the session world and has since played for the likes of Jorja Smith, Mabel, Steam Down, Tom Misch and Poppy Ajudha, touring around Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the UK.
Since releasing her debut EP Dancin’ Garuda, she’s gone on to form her own band with fellow Steamdown members Benjamin Appiah on drums, Lorenz Okello on keys and Naiyah on vocals. This group went on to play a sold-out Ronnie Scott’s and hit festival stages around the UK.
Cleo Savva (they/she) is a British-Cypriot queer multi-disciplinary artist and co-creator. Cleo is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed across the UK and Europe and recorded on albums with an array of incredible artists including The Moulettes, Miryam Solomon, Huw Marc Bennett and Allysha Joy.
Cleo is also a DJ and producer, who has a monthly show Collective Sounds on Voices Radio, and is also a co-founder of the gender minority DJ collective Drum & Babes. Cleo’s practice is rooted in mutually-agreed values, love ethics, abolition, co-creation, and the belief that everyone can be an artist.
Jessica Lauren (she/her) is a pianist, keyboard player and composer, who’s been a cult figure on the UK’s soul and jazz scene since the early 1990s. Drawing on a wide range of influences, she has forged her own distinctive sound and musical personality, blending jazz, blues, soul, psychedelia, 1960s film soundtracks and elements from Brazilian, African and Afro-Cuban music to create a rich landscape of musical tones and colours, all dusted with a fine layer of sea salt from her home out on the coast in Margate.
Jessica’s philosophy is to try to make beautiful, emotional, melodic music which is seemingly simple and always accessible.
