Pretend Academy: Logical/ Absurd

Wed 29 Jan 2025 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM OMUK Studios, WC1X 0LB

What is Pretend Academy?

Pretend Academy is a monthly boot camp led by Chris Mead, for any improviser who has gone through an improv school's training programme and is thinking - What next? This class is for improvisers who want to progress in the craft - we expect all students to already have experience performing and know how to sustain scene work.

  • We will start at 6pm and the session will only have a brief warm-up before moving into exercises and scene work
  • We will focus on a different skill each month
  • The class size will be limited to 12 people maximum
  • Each class will also include a free ticket to The Pretend Night - which starts at the same venue at 8.15pm
  • The class is open to any improviser of any school of improv - we love and respect all forms of the craft

Summary

Position play is a theory created by Miles Stroth and expanded by Brian James O’Connell. In brief, it states there are FOUR kinds of improv scene.

  • Logical/ Absurd (UCB game would fall into this category)
  • Character POV (which is driven by a character’s view of the world)
  • Realistic (slow burn, relationship-based scenes)
  • Alt. reality (where the rules of the world are different from our own - like genre)

Where? OMUK Studios, Unit 2, 22 Pakenham Street, King's Cross, London, WC1X 0LB
When? 6-8pm (with optional show 8.15-10.15pm)
How much? £25

In this first session, I’d like to look more deeply at Logical/ Absurd scenes.

More info

  • In a Logical/ Absurd scene - there is one character that presents the logical, status quo position and another that is doing something unusual or different.
  • Although Game of the Scene falls into this category - there are many variations and nuances which widens the category.
  • We will be looking at finding these dynamics in the moment of playing, we won’t be pulling premise from a monologue or group game.
  • You will have a chance to indicate any access needs to the teacher at the start of the class.
  • Tickets are non-refundable, please let us know if you can't attend the event.

This is a new venture and may change and grow in the months to come. Please contact hello@chrismead.co if you have any questions!

See you soon!
