Description
Join us for an engaging and informative session on seagrass meadows in Kent, and their importance for local biodiversity, human health and livelihoods. Seagrass is a marine flowering plant, which creates vast underwater meadows, taking up carbon and providing a habitat for numerous marine species. In the UK, we have lost up to 90% of our seagrass meadows. However, with the support of local communities, Project Seagrass is working to protect existing meadows and restore seagrass to suitable areas. And we need your help.
With support from local creative project 'Art for Our Sea', we're exploring the viability of seagrass restoration in a new site in the Kent area. Following conversations with local stakeholders, this September, we are completing site surveys and assessments, to be followed by aerial mapping. We invite you to come and join us to share your views on seagrass in Kent, and share any local knowledge of the area.
10am to 10:30am - Welcome talk: Overview of seagrass ecosystems and why they are important to Kent.
10:30am to 12pm - Open discussion: Discussions around seagrass and related aspects in the local area: environmental conditions, recreational activities and commercial sea use and potential local impacts to seagrass etc.
We invite anyone with an interest in the local environment and marine conservation to attend. Whether you've never heard of seagrass before, or have concerns around seagrass interacting with your use of the marine environment, everyone is welcome to attend and share their views.
For more information, please email flo@projectseagrass.org. A follow-up online session will be held for those unable to attend in person. Teas and coffees will be provided. Let's work together to protect Kent's underwater meadows for future generations!
