OUR STORY

“No one knows what seagrasses are”.

Inspired by their PhD work and experiences in Indonesia, in 2010 Richard Unsworth and Leanne Cullen-Unsworth published a key paper: Recognising the necessity for Indo‐Pacific seagrass conservation.

In 2012, while pursuing masters degrees at Swansea University, Benjamin Jones and Richard Lilley each developed a passion for seagrass meadows with their supervisor Richard Unsworth.

Multiple ideas to create a vehicle for communicating the value of seagrass collided, resulting in the creation of Project Seagrass as a formal association in 2013. This included the creation of Project Seagrass social media accounts and a website to help deliver seagrass science to the public.

Project Seagrass obtained charity status in 2015.
