Land, Food, Community - A Farm Walk at Loch Arthur
Farmers, Growers and Landworkers are invited to join a lunch and farm walk at Loch Arthur Camphill Community. We will take in the market garden and dairy operation, with a wee look into the creamery.
Loch Arthur is a unique community that brings together people in shared supported living and common purpose. Home to around 75 people, there is a farm, a large garden, a creamery, a bakery, craft workshops and a thriving farm shop and cafe.
The productive garden sits at the heart of the community. It comprises a field garden of four acres where the community grow vegetables, large greenhouses, a soft fruit area and two small orchards. All fruit and veg is grown to biodynamic Demeter standards. The fruit and vegetables will either find their way to the kitchens of the Loch Arthur houses or will be sold in the farm shop.
The farm runs a dairy herd of 30 dairy shorthorn cows plus followers. Cows are milked twice a day and the milk runs directly to the onsite creamery to be turned into a range of produce.
They also have a suckler beef herd and around 100 breeding ewes which provides meat to be processed in the butchery and sold either through their own shop or other organic outlets. Due to time constraints it's unlikely we'll get to this part of the farm, but questions can be asked!
This farm walk is part of the South West Soil Health Cluster, and the Galloway Veg Growers networking programme, funded through the Scottish Government Knowledge Transfer Innovation Fund.
