Climate change is already affecting the historic environment, from flooding, extreme temperatures and drought to changing patterns of pests, disease and decay. At the same time, heritage organisations have an important role to play in reducing emissions and supporting a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.

This course will give you the knowledge and confidence to understand climate change, explore what it means for heritage, and identify practical actions you can take in your own role and organisation.

The course is delivered by PS: Planet, a sustainability consultancy specialising in practical climate action for business and organisations. Our team brings extensive experience of climate engagement alongside direct experience of working in the heritage sector, including Richard Smith's previous work with English Heritage.

What will you learn?

Throughout the day, we will explore:

  • The science of climate change and the evidence behind it
  • How climate change is affecting the historic environment and heritage sector
  • The role of heritage in responding to the climate emergency
  • Climate justice and the different ways climate change affects people and places
  • Carbon footprints, emissions reduction and the path towards net zero
  • The policy context for climate action in the heritage sector
  • Practical examples of low-carbon heritage
  • The co-benefits of taking climate action
  • How to have constructive conversations about climate change
  • What climate action could look like in your own role and organisation

The course combines presentations, discussion and practical activities, with opportunities to consider the issues from a heritage perspective and learn from others working across the sector.

Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone working in the heritage sector who wants to develop their understanding of climate change and take practical action.

It is relevant to people working with:

  • Historic buildings and sites
  • Collections and archives
  • Historic landscapes and gardens
  • Museums and cultural heritage
  • Heritage conservation and management
  • Heritage policy, planning and advice
  • Heritage education and engagement
  • Supporting services and organisations working with the heritage sector

You don't need any previous knowledge of climate change or sustainability, and you don't need to be responsible for sustainability within your organisation. The course is designed for people at all levels who want to understand the issues and explore what they can do.

Becoming Carbon Literate

This course is based on the Heritage Carbon Literacy course developed by Historic England and is accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project.

To achieve Carbon Literate certification, participants will need to complete the required evidence following the course, including identifying actions they can take to reduce carbon emissions.

Successful participants will receive Carbon Literate certification from The Carbon Literacy Project.
