Psychedelics & Art Therapy

A Two-Part Professional Training in Preparation, Integration & the Creative Process

October 5 – November 30, 2026 | Live Online via Zoom

Discover how art therapy can offer a vital bridge between psychedelic experience and meaningful, embodied integration.

Psychedelic experiences can bring forward imagery, emotions, memories, bodily sensations, archetypal material, and insights that can be difficult to capture through words alone.

Art therapy offers another language.

Through image-making, metaphor, symbolism, somatic awareness, and the creative process, experiences that may initially feel ineffable can be witnessed, externalized, explored, and integrated over time.

Psychedelics & Art Therapy is an immersive two-part professional training series exploring how art therapy and somatic approaches can support psychedelic preparation and integration within a trauma-informed and harm-reduction framework.

Rather than a course teaching people how to use psychedelics, this training focuses on the therapeutic work surrounding psychedelic and other non-ordinary state experiences—and particularly on the unique role that art therapy can play throughout that journey.

Developed and taught by Charmaine Husum, RCAT-S, DKATI, RCS, MTC, CT, author of Psychedelics and Art Therapy: A Trauma-Informed Manual for Somatic Self-Discovery (Routledge, 2025), this training draws upon more than a decade of clinical practice, research, teaching, and international presentation in psychedelic preparation and integration.

ONE TRAINING. TWO PROGRESSIVE PARTS.

Parts One and Two have been intentionally designed as a progressive learning journey.

Part One establishes the foundation. Part Two builds upon and expands it.

Participants are strongly encouraged to register for the complete series from the outset to experience the full arc of the training.

PART ONE

Psychedelics & Art Therapy: Preparation & Integration

October 5 – November 2, 2026
3:30–5:30 PM PT
No class October 19

Part One establishes the theoretical, ethical, creative, and trauma-informed foundations for incorporating art therapy and somatic approaches into psychedelic preparation and integration.

Participants will explore how creative and non-verbal approaches can help establish safety before an experience, support expression and meaning-making afterward, and provide ways of working with material that may be difficult to access through verbal processing alone.

Areas of exploration include:

  • Understanding psychedelic and other non-ordinary states of consciousness
  • The historical relationship between art and altered states
  • Art therapy theory within psychedelic preparation and integration
  • Trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches
  • Ethical considerations when incorporating art into psychedelic therapy
  • Using art therapy to support preparation
  • Art materials: clinical considerations, precautions, and possibilities
  • Creative interventions across preparation, experience, and integration
  • Set and setting
  • Safety, stabilization, grounding, and nervous-system regulation
  • Somatic approaches and embodied integration
  • Meditation and contemplative practices
  • Transpersonal and spiritual approaches
  • Archetypes, shadow material, and the collective unconscious
  • Parts work, IFS-informed approaches, inner-child work, and reparenting
  • Attachment and boundaries
  • Dreamwork
  • Neuroplasticity, the Default Mode Network, creativity, and non-ordinary states
  • Translating psychedelic insights into meaningful and sustainable change
  • Indigenous perspectives and considerations surrounding plant medicines
  • Legal and ethical considerations
  • Precautions and contraindications
  • Different psychedelic medicines and other pathways into non-ordinary states

Throughout the course, theory is paired with experiential art-making, reflection, practical applications, and opportunities to explore how these approaches may translate into therapeutic practice.

PART TWO

Psychedelics & Art Therapy: Expanding the Journey

November 9 – November 30, 2026
3:30–5:30 PM PT

Part Two continues directly from the foundations established in Part One.

This advanced portion of the training moves deeper into the intersection of art therapy, psychedelics, creativity, spirituality, somatic practice, and non-ordinary states.

Through advanced concepts, experiential practices, and guest teachings, participants will expand their therapeutic toolkit while considering broader ways that creativity can support preparation, integration, meaning-making, embodiment, and transformation.

Areas of exploration include:

  • Advanced trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches
  • Ethical considerations and energetic safety
  • Expressive arts within psychedelic preparation and integration
  • Sound and creative approaches
  • Visionary art and non-ordinary states
  • Breathwork and alternative pathways into non-ordinary states
  • Spiritual and transpersonal dimensions of psychedelic experiences
  • Indigenous perspectives and considerations
  • Working creatively with imagery, symbolism, metaphor, and embodied experience
  • Advanced experiential art therapy practices
  • Applying creative approaches within professional practice

Part Two also includes:

Guest Presentations
Learn from invited experts bringing additional perspectives from the fields of psychedelic therapy, consciousness, expressive arts, spirituality, and non-ordinary states.

Experiential Learning
Engage directly with art-making, creative directives, somatic exploration, reflection, and group discussion.

Clinical & Practical Application
Explore ways of translating theory into thoughtful, ethical therapeutic practice.

IMPORTANT: PART TWO BUILDS UPON PART ONE

Unlike previous versions of this training in which an advanced course could be taken independently, this two-part series has been intentionally designed as a progressive training.

Participants registering for Part Two must have completed Part One or have previously completed an equivalent foundational Psychedelics & Art Therapy training with Charmaine Husum.

If you are new to this training, we recommend registering for Parts One and Two together to experience the complete learning journey.

WHY ART THERAPY?

Psychedelic experiences frequently move beyond ordinary language.

People may encounter powerful imagery, memories, emotions, bodily sensations, symbols, archetypal material, spiritual experiences, and insights that can be difficult to explain—or even fully understand—immediately afterward.

The creative process offers another way of knowing.

Art can provide a tangible bridge between an internal experience and the external world. It can help individuals capture what might otherwise be forgotten, return to important imagery over time, externalize difficult material, engage metaphor and symbolism, and develop new relationships with what emerged during a non-ordinary state.

For therapists and practitioners, art therapy can therefore offer valuable tools for supporting preparation, safety, exploration, meaning-making, and longer-term integration.

As interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy continues to expand, developing thoughtful, ethical, trauma-informed approaches to integration becomes increasingly important.

This training places art therapy directly within that conversation.
