Personal Safety for Women

The Orkney Violence Against Women and Girls Partnership is delighted to bring you Personal Safety Training (for women).

This full-day course provides women with practical self-defence skills alongside comprehensive theory, with plenty of opportunity for questions, discussion and tailored advice.

It is a multi-award-winning, empowerment-focused and trauma-informed Personal Safety course, combining expert-led theory with hands-on self-defence training.

The theory element covers the law around self-defence and reasonable use of force, recognising warning and danger signs, voice control, defensive stance, and understanding effective strike zones. It also explores the use of improvised weapons and practical scenarios, such as what to do if you believe you are being followed.

The practical self-defence component teaches breakaway techniques from wrist and clothing grabs, escapes from strangulation, defence against frontal and rear attacks, and strategies for responding to ground attacks, including physical and, where relevant, sexual assault.

Adaptations can be made to ensure the course is accessible for participants with disabilities.

This course is delivered by the Scottish Centre for Personal Safety - Home - The Scottish Centre for Personal Safety - and is also highly beneficial for frontline workers or staff who may work alone or enter homes and other vulnerable situations as part of their role.
