Improving Editorial Practice: Embedding EDI

Fri 6 Mar 2026 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM GMT Edinburgh Climate Change Institute

This three-hour session will explore how to improve your publishing by embedding EDI practices into your workflow through four key areas:

  • Commissioning
  • Author care
  • Sensitivity reads
  • Language choices.

During the session we will:

  • Look at how submissions systems can be reviewed and potentially adjusted to be more inclusive
  • Review how editors and agents can provide the best possible care to all their authors
  • Examine the ‘what, when and why’ of sensitivity reads
  • Explore the benefits of clear language-use guidelines for authors and editors.

This training course is designed to support you in the transition from principle-level EDI commitments to realising the benefits to your publishing programme of EDI becoming embedded in good practice. Editorial staff will be furnished with practical tools and the confidence to take steps towards best practice.

A course led by local publishing professionals with relevant experience and examples

Leading the conversation will be four industry professionals providing examples from their own work in the Scottish sector:

  • Sally Polson (Editorial Director, Floris Books),
  • Jeda Pearl (writer, co-director Scottish BPOC Writers Network),
  • Anna Walsh (editor, consultant)
  • Elizabeth Fraser (Assistant Commissioning Editor, Edinburgh University Press).

An opportunity to meet other publishing professionals working on EDI

A further aim is to invite publishers to talk about their work and challenges in this area and foster a community of practice for EDI in the sector; there will be breakaway conversations and interactive elements to the programme. In these conversations you will be invited to share your initiatives, obstacles and learnings.
