Accessibility Metadata Masterclass

Accessibility metadata is essential: it is the only way to flag your text's accessibility in your product metadata. Under the European Accessibility Act, this metadata is legally required in addition to making the ebook itself functionally accessible. But how can you scale that work up to cover your entire backlist?

Accessible publishing expert leader Simon Mellins guides publishers through the latest requirements and best practices in accessible metadata. The course goes over regulatory background and current industry status, specific Schema.org, ONIX and MARC accessibility metadata requirements, and introduces the strategies that leading publishers are deploying to meet their readers' needs. The course considers the supply chain holistically, helping publishers find practical, workable solutions that meet the demands of the law and the needs of print-disabled readers.

Accessibility Metadata Masterclass is a focused half-day course covering techniques and strategies for creating and delivering rich accessibility metadata for your ebooks. We focus primarily on ONIX and EPUB Schema metadata, looking at not just creating metadata, but how to work at scale in practical ways, and what happens to this metadata once you've sent it out into the world.

About the trainer

Simon Mellins is a Digital Publishing Consultant. He is currently focused on accessibility, working with publishers and vendors around the world on accessible publishing projects and services, and delivering a range of training courses on related topics. Over 2 decades in publishing he’s worked across sectors including STEM, academic, education, trade & illustrated. He is a co-founder of the Publishing Accessibility Action Group (PAAG), IPG accessible publishing course leader (CPD-accredited), a BookMachine Editorial Board member and hosts the popular Digital Publishing Podcast.
