About 'PUPO' and Adam Vincent Clarke:
Drawing inspiration from the enchanting yet intense Slavic folklore, 'PUPO' delicately navigates the intricate balance between the whimsical charm of fairytales and the haunting darkness of these narratives. PUPO, is a poignant Soviet re-telling of Pinocchio. Taking place in a war-torn Eastern European city, PUPO pays homage to the original Italian story of Pinocchio, evoking both a dark and playful atmosphere. In essence, it's an homage to the adults in war-time who comfort and distract their children through stories and games, or in this case a puppet show.
A vagabond of the Canadian East Coast, Adam Vincent Clarke (b.1992, Nova Scotia) is an internationally acclaimed composer and sound artist whose music is characterized by its richly poetic nature, folkloric roots, and vibrant imagery. Rooted in Canada, developed in Germany, and established in Belgium, Adam seeks out linguistic nuances, initiating musical dialogues which confront and connect us. Often composed with a tone of gewaltsame schönheit (violent beauty), his compositions balance lush harmony, dramatic narratives, and multidisciplinary fluency. Adam’s work has premiered with, among others, Sadler’s Wells (UK), Opera/Ballet Vlaanderen (BE), deSingel (BE), Ballet X (USA), Terminus Ballet Theatre (USA), RDT Utah (USA).
Nominated for the East Coast Music Award for Classical Composer of the Year, Clarke's work embodies a violent beauty marked by an eclectic mix of harmonies, rhythms, and melodies of Nova Scotia and the Balkans.
