Portuguese and Play: Connection Club | Make friends with locals, in Portuguese!

If you are only speaking Portuguese when you pay for groceries, but want to start having more meaningful and interesting conversations with locals, this event is for you.

More Connection Please 

As foreigners, we are learning Portuguese to connect with locals. But it can be difficult to have deeper chats - there is so much to overcome to get to that place of ease with conversation. Our embarrassment, for starters. And it takes so long to get to that point of comfort... How can we remove friction and get to connection sooner? We are partnering with PARA to find out! 

At this event, native Portuguese speakers over 65 get in for free, and Portuguese speakers of all ages at a reduced price. We facilitate one-on-one or small group chats with each native speaker and provide conversation prompt cards to reach for if you find yourself stumped. We encourage generous use of DeepL translate in case you need it!

To maximise the fun aspect, and incentivise you to actually chat, there will be prizes on the night for folks who successfully navigate deep chats, both for native speakers and Portuguese learners. Each person has a bingo card with small conversational wins, and your goal is to complete your card by the end of the night. The first one to do so wins a grand prize, but there are small prizes for everyone who completes it thereafter.

Here are some examples of what is on a Portuguese learner's bingo card:

1. Introduce yourself to three people in Portuguese
2. Make a joke in Portuguese (even if no one laughs!)
3. Learn a Portuguese saying and what it means

And some examples of what is on a native speaker's bingo card:

1. Share a story from your day
2. Tell a joke
3. Correct a learner's grammar

Our goal is to foster connection between locals and foreigners, and to help make everyone a little less lonely. If you have a neigbour you would like to connect with more, bring them along!

É falante nativo de português e gosta de conversar? Venha conhecer pessoas de todo o mundo que estão a aprender a sua língua e que querem muito ter conversas a sério, para além do «bom dia» na mercearia.

Este evento é organizado em parceria com a PARA. Falantes nativos com mais de 65 anos entram gratuitamente, e falantes de português de todas as idades pagam um preço reduzido.

Não é preciso preparar nada nem ser professor. Basta ter paciência e vontade de partilhar um bocadinho de si: uma história, uma piada, um ditado popular. Também vai ter um cartão de bingo com pequenos desafios, como contar uma piada ou corrigir a gramática de alguém, e há prémios para quem o completar!

Haverá petiscos para partilhar e bebidas à venda. Traga um vizinho ou um amigo. Queremos que todos, locais e estrangeiros, saiam daqui um pouco menos sozinhos e com novas amizades.
