workshop is a series for musicians and artists working in sound to present new and in-progress works and compositions. workshop supports experimentation, improvisation and composed sound and noise, maybe even “songs”. it is an informal showing, a moment to work through new ideas, or old ideas in a new way.

Curated by stephanie lavon trotter and presented by PWNW, the space supports acoustic and electronic works, as well as work that includes projection, lighting and movement.

About the Artists:

Loren Chasse has been presenting his soundwork through performances and recordings since the early 90s, both as a solo artist and in collaboration. His creative practice began in San Francisco, where he explored using the microphone, and its relationship to the field, as an instrument; passively recording ambient sound while also interacting with objects and spaces to elicit sounds behind the surfaces of things. Loren also worked as an educator, developing sound art workshops for children in both the Bay Area and in London. In the Bay Area, Loren has presented his work at the De Young Museum, the Berkeley Art Museum, and the Lab, and internationally at the London ICA, Brisbane Museum of Contemporary Art, Auckland Film Festival and at experimental music festivals throughout Europe. Most recently he has been presenting his work in Portland through the Creative Music Guild, Third Angle, and the Extradition Ensemble. Loren has recorded under his own name as well as in collaborative projects such as Latourel, Of, The Child Readers, Thuja, Blithe Sons, and id Battery. The Footpath has been a central performance theme over the past 20 years. Loren approaches a particular venue as a field that will guide the direction the performance takes, often using paper and natural materials as a means for creating a visual and sonic footpath.

Chadwick Ferguson is a musicker, writist, paper-muckist, mail artist, and performer exploring experimental sound-art-poetry forms and sound-text in Portland, Or.


Sara Jaffe is a writer, musician, and educator living in Portland, OR. In the early aughts she recorded and toured all over as guitarist with dance-damaged post-punk band Erase Errata. After spending the last 20 years focused mostly on fiction writing (she’s published a novel, Dryland, and a short story collection, Hurricane Envy), she’s recently started performing as Camp Cataract, a solo guitar improv act intent on mangled riffs, treble affliction, and the queer art of failure.
