The Queen Sofia Spanish Institute (QSSI) is a New York-based nonprofit corporation founded in 1954. Its mission is to share the contributions of Spanish-speakers to the history and culture of the United States and to showcase the excellence of the Spanish-speaking world in numerous fields so that lasting ties of friendship may be formed, mutual understanding promoted, and bonds of peace strengthened.

An example of its current programming includes partnering with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to develop educational resources that describe the foundational role that Spain and Spanish-speaking countries played in United States history. We have developed an educational app, a teacher guide and three classroom posters that explain the contributions of Spain to America's War of lndependence. These resources will reach over 6,000 public schools in the U.S.

The QSSI is developing the Houston Friends of the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute. In exchange for your generous donation to the QSSI, you are invited to attend two exciting events to be held in May in Houston, Texas: the inaugural presentation of Spain's Royal Academy of History's Portal of Hispanic History, a tool that has geolocated the entire history of Spain and the territories under its Administration throughout history, on May 16th at 6:30 pm at the Julia ldeson Library; and the 2023 Sophia Awards for Excellence Gala on May 17th. Both events will take place in the presence of Queen Sofia of Spain.
