Be a Menace explores the concept of being a social disruptor – a rebel, a resister, a renegade.

This evening of moving image work focuses on the experiences of gender outlaws – and particularly transgender individuals – whose very existence challenges societies built on state-sanctioned discrimination and violence. Rather than sensationalising trans experiences, this event platforms, interrogates, and celebrates the visual culture and embodied knowledges of gender non-conforming communities.

The film programme is curated by Otherness Archive:

Pirate Boys | Pol Merchan | 2018 | Germany
In Pirate Boys, fiction and documentary become intertwined as we explore the relationship between embodiment, identity, and desire.

Transexual Menace | Rosa von Praunheim |1996 | United States
Transexual Menace takes its title from the name of "the most exciting political action group in the USA": transgender activists who are defining themselves, demanding their legal rights, and fighting for medical care and against job discrimination. The film offers remarkable insights into the everyday lives of trans people from around the world, trying to make a home in the United States.

Film access: Transexual Menace subtitles are unavailable due to resources
Content Warning: outdated use of language, transphobia and mentions of gender based violence, needle and cutting shown in an erotic context

Alongside the screenings, the groundbreaking artist Sweatmother will reflect on films as sites of resistance and liberation.

This event is supported by Queer@King's and the King’s Activist-in-Residence Programme.

We ask attendees to please get tested for Covid before attending.
