In his letter of 23rd April 1947 to Pierre Loeb, Artaud evokes the return of a time 'when man was a tree without organs or function'. This talk will explore the implications of this proposition for Artaud's 'body without organs' as 'human tree', reading it in the context of the forest shamanism of his work on the Tarahumaras and the marks on wood of the Ivry Notebooks.
