The Bach Dialogues with Matt Haimovitz and Chistopher O’Riley
In early 2026, former NPR host Christopher O’Riley and multi-GRAMMY-nominated cellist Matt Haimovitz launch their new album, The Bach Dialogues (PENTATONE). The artists share a voracious and expansive appetite for music across genres, ranging from Radiohead (Shuffle.Play.Listen) and Pussy Riot (Troika) to Beethoven sonatas on period instruments (BEETHOVEN, Period.). Both Haimovitz and O’Riley hold Bach in the highest esteem among their multivarious musical passions. With this forthcoming collaboration focused on Bach’s Sonatas for Viola da Gamba, O’Riley and Haimovitz realize a long-held dream: to enter Bach’s Platonic timbral world. Haimovitz arranges the viola da gamba part for his 5-string baroque cello piccolo—on which he recorded Bach’s Sixth Solo Suite—while O’Riley performs on Bach’s favored keyboard instrument, the clavichord.
For the live tour, Haimovitz and O’Riley use the electric 5-string cello alongside next-generation sound sampling, employing “physical modeling” of a virtual historical keyboard. Together, O’Riley and Haimovitz perform Bach’s three original Gamba Sonatas and the C Major Trio Sonata, with solo Preludes and Fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier and the Cello Suites rounding out the program.
Much like their earlier immersion in the Beethoven works for cello and piano—BEETHOVEN.Period., released on the PENTATONE Oxingale Series—their exploration of instruments from the composer’s time has yielded new and unique insights. These discoveries result in unprecedented freedom and expressivity, making The Bach Dialogues an inevitable and exciting new chapter in their long-standing collaboration.
