Matt Rendell joined us live on Zoom for a book event on July 23, launching his latest book, 'Colombia Es Pasion: the Generation of Racing Cyclists Who Changed Their Nation And The Tour de France.'
Matt says the leap from a peasant farming background in Colombia to the Tour de France is bigger than the leap of mankind landing on the Moon. His book and our conversation explains why - and what the journey from homespun training in rural Colombia to the global spotlight of the Tour means both to the cyclists and their nation.
Matt also gives an insight to his acclaimed biography of the late Italian cycling champion Marco Pantani, with tales of intriguing encounters with Pantani's parents and the Italian police. Plus some reflections on his role in ITV's coverage of the Tour de France.
Jazz trumpeter Jim Howard brings us some summer atmosphere - and a magical rendition of an old Tour de France theme tune.
A ticket for the recorded stream is £5. It's Matt's most in-depth interview around the book and, whether you've read it or are thinking of reading it, it's a must-view.
Matt is in conversation with Duncan Steer.
