Ecologist Rebecca Nesbit joins us in Bath, as she launches her new book 'Tickets for the Ark: From Wasps to Whales – How Do We Choose What to Save?'
Our planet hasn’t seen the current rate of extinction since the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Can humans influence the future of the world's estimated 8.7 million species in a positive way? What criteria do we use to decide which species to prioritise? Are we wrong to love bees and hate wasps? What do we want the ‘natural world’ to look like, and how can we shape a world in which wildlife and people can thrive?
In 'Tickets for the Ark', Rebecca brings clarity to these head-spinningly huge debates at the intersection of science and ethics.
Alongside introducing 'Tickets for the Ark', Rebecca will be discussing her own career as a scientist and science's place within policy-making, education and society in general. There will be a chance to ask your own questions. The evening will be hosted by journalist Duncan Steer, whose most recent event at the Mission was with the adventurer Emily Chappell.
Rebecca Nesbit is the author of 'Is that Fish in your Tomato? The Fact and fiction of GM Foods' and has worked for the Royal Society of Biology and Nobel. She studied butterfly migration for her PhD and has also worked on research into whether honeybees can be trained to detect explosives. She has toured the world with Nobel Laureates and is a contributor to Scientific America, Biologist and Popular Science.
Tickets are £12 or £10 concessions. Book-plus-ticket is £20 (RRP of the book is £14.99).
