Boston Room, George IV, Chiswick, W4 2DR
Description
Five days before the start of the 2022 Tour de France, we are excited to welcome Daniel Friebe, one of cycling's best-known and most entertaining observers, for a special night at the Boston Room in Chiswick.
Daniel, well-known to cycling fans from ITV's Tour de France coverage and the vastly popular Cycling Podcast, is launching his new book, 'Jan Ullrich: The Best There Never Was', a biography of one of the Tour's most controversial champions.
For many years the European Editor of Procycling magazine, Daniel has covered 21 Tours de France, collaborated with Mark Cavendish on his two memoirs, and is the author, with photographer Pete Goding, of the best-selling Mountain High and Mountain Higher. Daniel has also published a biography of Eddy Merckx and 'Allez Wiggo: How Bradley Wiggins won Olympic Gold and the Tour de France in 2012'.
Ullrich, the 1997 Tour champion was, at his peak, voted Germany's most popular sportsperson of all time, but failed to live up to early, stellar expectations. Raised in the East German system, Ullrich was predicted to dominate the Tour de France for a generation, only to be dragged down by his demons, the chaos of 90s cycling - and Lance Armstrong. 'The Best There Never Was' is the first biography of Ullrich and is the result of seven years' research.
Please join us for an entertaining and illuminating evening of cycling chat as Daniel discusses one of the Tour's most controversial eras, his own career in cycling, this year's race and all matters arising. There will be a chance to ask your own questions.
Daniel Friebe will be in conversation with Duncan Steer, former Procycling magazine writer and regular host of live events at the George and across the country.
Early tickets are £10 or £25 including a book (the book's RRP is £25).
