Understanding how words can heal, harm, or transform children’s worlds
Language is free, but deeply impactful—shaping attitudes, biases, and the way we see and interact with others. This workshop invites professionals from all sectors to reflect on the words we use in conversations, recordings, meetings, and materials, and how they can be healing or harmful, trauma-reducing or trauma-inducing.
Drawing on examples from trauma, fostering, education, and social care, we’ll explore person-first and externalising language, the influence of labels and acronyms, and how communication shapes perception and practice. Through stories, images, and discussion, attendees will increase their awareness of language’s ripple effects and leave with practical strategies to use words with greater care and intention.
Aims:
- Deepen understanding of the impact of language
- Reflect on biases within language use
- Explore alternative words and phrases to improve practice
