Step into the Tea Break! Britain’s daily ritual is coming to life through a sound and visual art installation. Join acclaimed art historian Julia Jane Heckles for an interactive journey down tea-break memory lane. Whether you are a family, an artist, history lover, just curious or simply enjoy a brew, there is a seat and a cuppa here for you.

Immerse yourself in this combined sound art installation and art history talk. Explore the visual art and design history and the political story behind the British workplace tea break. A soundscape will feature tea inspired music, voices of memories and those familiar tea time sounds.

Reminisce and share your own workplace memories on our community story wall. Relax, slow down, and connect with others over a cup of tea. Come together, share a story or two. This is more than an art history talk — it is a celebration of our shared history.

About Julia Jane Heckels 

Julia Jane is a Ramsgate based fine artist and art historian originally from East London, whose multidisciplinary practice spans installation, conceptual art, sound and audience engagement. Richly informed art practice with a research background in Victorian to Modern art history, specialism 1848 to 1939.

With a BA in History of Art and an MA in Fine Art by Research, Julia Jane aims to break down art historical and fine art hierarchies. Challenging the boundaries of traditional art gallery spaces with site-specific, research-led art installations.

As an arts educator and creator and speaker behind the VOICES on ART talks, Julia Jane focuses on arts education, drawing upon her dual fine art and history of art expertise.

A Sonic Trail Sunday Special

Welcome to the Sonic Trail, the captivating, imaginative soul of the Ramsgate Festival of Sound. We invite you to step off the beaten track and immerse yourself in a curated journey of site-specific sound installations at some of Ramsgate’s most unique locations.

Coinciding with the first weekend of English Heritage Open Days, this year's trail celebrates the brilliant intersection of local history and sound art, inspired by the theme ‘Everyday Histories. Each installation represents a new work, specially commissioned by the Festival of Sound.

From mesmerising field recordings to avant-garde audio art, each piece is specifically crafted to dialogue with its environment, turning familiar historic corners into extraordinary sensory discoveries. It is a completely free, self-guided adventure designed for the curious listener. Grab your map, open your ears to the unexpected and enjoy the Sonic Trail.

Accessibility

- Free parking is available on site for Blue Badge holders.

- There are steps to the entrance. An access ramp is available on site, please contact the festival to arrange access using this. Inside the venue is step-free.

- Drinking water is available. Tea will be provided.

- Toilets are available on site. Please ask a festival crew member for access.
