We will be removing invasive species from this floodplain habitat, namely Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) and Flowering Rush (butomus umbellatus).

Instruction on species ID, removal techniques and impacts on native ecosystems will be provided.

Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) is within the “touch-me-not” family. When the plant sets its seeds, the seed pods dry out and can ‘explode’ when lightly touched, spreading seeds over greater distances. Spotted Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) is Himalayan Balsam’s native cousin.

Flowering Rush (butomus umbellatus), is an invasive aquatic plant, producing a cluster of pink flowers from early summer to mid fall. These invasives spreads easily, with minor disturbances breaking off fragments that can survive for several weeks and be transported downstream and establish new plants.

Instruction on species ID, removal techniques and its impact on native ecosystems will be provided.
