Rebel City Drama Club presents "Rossum's Universal Robots” or “R.U.R.”, a groundbreaking play written by Czech author Karel Čapek in 1920, renowned for introducing the term "robot" to the world. Directed by Rob O’Sullivan, the narrative unfolds in a factory where robots, created to serve humans, are devoid of emotions and desires, designed solely for labour. As the story progresses, the robots, who initially reflect human-like behaviour without feelings, begin to develop signs of consciousness and emotion, leading to a rebellion against their creators.
The play critiques industrialisation and the dehumanisation of labour, raising profound questions about the nature of humanity, free will, and the consequences of technological advancement. Featuring a large and diverse cast of talented actors, we are excited to showcase this poignant commentary on the intersection of technology and society that remains relevant today.
