An Evening with Iain McGilchrist + Afterparty
Wed 10 Nov 2021 7:00 PM - 11:30 PM GMT
93 Feet East, Old Truman Brewery, E1 6QL
Description
Our in-person events are back! Join us for an evening with Dr. Iain McGilchrist, followed by our first social gathering in two years. A psychiatrist, philosopher and author of the groundbreaking ‘The Master and His Emissary,’ McGilchrist will be discussing his long-awaited new book ‘The Matter with Things: Our Brains, Our Delusions, and the Unmaking of the World’. Widely hailed as another masterpiece, the book draws on cutting-edge neurology, philosophy and physics to present a vision of how we can transform our pursuit of truth and re-enchant the world.
About the Event
This will be a hybrid event on Weds, 10 November. The in-person experience is happening at Ninety One on Brick Lane in London, with doors opening at 7pm. As well as a discussion with McGilchrist around his new book, we’ll have a Q&A and facilitate interactive conversations (both in person and online) aimed at exploring how McGilchrist's ideas can help us make sense of 2021.
After the main event, we’ll turn up the music and have a few drinks. It's a chance to connect with other interesting people and have some fun together. Or if you've been part of the Rebel Wisdom digital campfire, a chance to meet up with people in 3D who you've only ever seen on Zoom.
About 'The Matter with Things'
McGilchrist is a long-time friend of Rebel Wisdom and one of the most important and insightful voices we’ve featured. In ‘The Matter with Things’ he tackles the big questions: Who are we? What is the world? How can we understand consciousness, matter, space and time? Can we really neglect the sacred and divine?
In doing so, he argues that we have become enslaved to an account of things dominated by the brain’s left hemisphere, one that blinds us to an awe-inspiring reality that is all around us, had we but eyes to see it. He suggests that in order to understand ourselves and the world we need science and intuition, reason and imagination, not just one or two. When we do, we tap into an understanding that is both profound and beautiful, in line with the deepest traditions of human wisdom.

With a gift for synthesising neuroscience, culture and philosophy, his thought has provided essential frames for making sense of the times we live in and proved particularly influential on Rebel Wisdom over the years.
