From regulation to reciprocity: a breathwork course exploring nervous system regulation

Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm, from 26 November to 17 December

Our nervous system shapes how we meet the world. When we feel safe and regulated, we can move flexibly between states of activation and rest, returning to safety and coherence as needed. When we feel safe, perception opens, our sense of self and world expands.

Yet in modern times of chronic stress, social fragmentation, and productivity-driven culture, many of us become stuck in states of dysregulation (fight, flight, freeze, shutdown). Awareness contracts, perception narrows, and we lose touch with our relational nature - longing to belong, but isolated from connection.

Our nervous systems learn what is safe through co-regulation; inherited from our caregivers and ancestors, conditioned by culture and lived experience. The nervous system is predictive, continuously anticipating what’s next based on past models, which then informs how we react and respond - how we meet life.

Through breath, we can bring these patterns into conscious awareness. We can learn to regulate, to listen, to attune to inner and outer ecologies, expanding our capacity to feel and respond.

In doing so we reclaim autonomy and our capacity to participate. A regulated nervous system perceives its place in the wider web - an embodied remembering of interdependence.

Across the four weeks we’ll explore:

Somatic mapping and polyvagal awareness: learning to identify and navigate our own nervous system states and window of tolerance

Breath-based regulation practices: for balancing, downregulating and upregulating our nervous systems safely

Nervous system ecology: how our nervous systems co-exist and regulate with other (humans and more-than-human) nervous systems

Creative and reflective practices: to integrate and deepen embodied awareness

Through this journey, we reconnect with the body as an ecosystem, nested within larger living systems, which are continuously spun and re-spun in networks of reciprocity.

Our capacity to regulate informs the balance of the ecological niche in which we are entangled, a coherent nervous system contributing harmony towards the whole.

When we live from this place of embodied ecological awareness, what is possible? How do we move through, care for, and relate with ourselves, each other, the world? When we feel regulated, what new channels of perception emerge?

This is both a practical and contemplative journey designed to give you a toolkit of nervous system regulation practices as well as nurturing community times.

Facilitator

Charlie is a breath science practitioner (School of Breath Science) and trauma-informed Conscious Connected Breathwork facilitator based near Falmouth. She is the founder of Recalibrate Breath, offering breath coaching and workshops online and in person. Her work explores how principles of living systems and regenerative design can inform inner practice - cultivating a felt sense of our interdependence with the world.
