Search for a Nationally Scarce Hoverfly

We're looking for volunteers to help with the search for an elusive species of hoverfly. Parasyrphus nigritarsis is a 'Nationally Scarce' species, usually encountered in Alder and willow woodlands. The larvae of this species predate those of Chrysomelid beetles and looking for its tiny white eggs amongst clumps of beetle eggs is one of the best ways to detect its presence. We want to see if this unusual species is living in the Nature Reserve at Chester Zoo and for this we need your help!

The species was recorded last year on the Nature Reserve, and to determine whether this was just a 'one off', or whether the hoverfly is likely to be using the site, we will be undertaking a search for its eggs and larvae on dock leaves. Having lots of 'pairs of eyes' makes this a much more manageable task!

No existing knowledge is necessary but you'll need to be willing to get stuck in and to spend a lot of time searching around in the undergrowth. This is not a formal workshop or training opportunity, just an opportunity to come along and help out. The session is suitable for those aged 18+ only.

We will be meeting at the entrance to Chester Zoo Nature Reserve. More information on the exact meeting point and what to bring along etc. will also be sent to you ahead of the event - please do check your spam emails if you've not heard from us! The Nature Reserve is accessible via public transport (get the bus to the main zoo entrance).

Accessibility: We will be sticking to public areas of the reserve (on paths or in the grass) but please note that the whole site is on a slight slope.
