Mapping our Mammals - from Moles to Mountain Hares
A new Mammal Atlas for Cheshire is on the horizon - and you can be involved! We're joined by guest speakers Natasha and Tony from the North West England Mammal Network to tell us all about it.
Cheshire has a proud history of mammal recording, with the Mammals of Cheshire book created in 2008 laying the groundwork for what we know today. But as habitats shift, climates change, and species recover or decline, those earlier records need refreshing.
At this talk, we'll be hearing about plans to create a new mammal atlas, combining new and historical data to map where mammals are living across Cheshire. Come along to learn more about:
- What an 'Atlas' entails and why they are important for understanding our local wildlife and directing conservation efforts.
- What the current data tells us and why there are gaps in our knowledge.
- The North West England Mammal Recording Network and their work connecting people who want to better understand and protect mammals.
- How easy it is for anyone to contribute to the Atlas - whether you’re a beginner or an experienced recorder.
Our Wildlife Exchange Sessions are relaxed occasions, with time for asking questions and chatting with others after the talk. Free drinks and biscuits will be provided! The event is organised by RECORD and kindly hosted by Chester Zoo as part of the Networks for Nature project.
Please note that the event is aimed at adults, however older children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
This session takes place at Cedar House, Chester Zoo.
