Following the smouldering 'Burning of the Clavie' earlier this year, we bring the midwinter fire ritual back up to Tod this January.

A ceremony from pre-Christian times that marks the cosmological ‘real’ New Year, before the calendars changed in the 1500s, this gathering invokes the return of the sun in the depths of winter so in turn feel free to bring or do something to engage with this shedding movement into the light.

Opening the doors of the Fielden Hall at 1pm, for a day long gathering our line up includes poets, singers and musicians producing sounds from folk, through to drone, connecting string (harp) hardware (modular), and spoken word (poetry) through woodwind (flute, clarinet), vocals (light singing) & analogue synthesis (tape).

The continuous drone and experimentation will flow from start to end, with flames and space for an improvised section. The tone will be horizontal and playful, with our glowing embers and warm sounds blending to create a snug atmosphere on a deep midwinter's day.

Artists include,

Aisha Vaughan

https://aishavaughan.bandcamp.com/album/the-gate

Aisha is an experimental artist whose music captures the landscapes, lore and languages of her native Wales. Living in the Elan Valley at the headwaters of the River Wye, she lives and works among moss-covered forests, open fields and running waters, using samples, field recordings, live harp and her own angelic voice to create delicate compositions as soothing as they are ethereal.

AHRKH

https://www.nts.live/shows/golden-ratio-frequencies

Joining us with synths and records, Alex Mccarte, of Golden Ration Frequencies, Gnod and NTS creates a transcendental frequency driven closing dj set, as well as improvised harmonic tones.

Grahl

https://resonancerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/echoes-of-light

Friend of resonance, Laurel Morgan takes a new direction by accompanying her light singing with her own music creating a new movement and space. With electronics and effects she weaves her light language to captivate the audience and take them to enchanted realms.

Zaffar Kunial

https://www.rcwlitagency.com/authors/kunial-zaffar/

https://www.instagram.com/zaffarkunial/

Following his performance at Harmonicon with Matthew Shaw (Stone Club), local Hebden Bridge poet Zaff brings spoken word imagery and magic to the flowing tones. He is the author of collections such as Us and England's Green, and is known for his poems that explore themes of identity, language, heritage and local landscapes.

Mochyn Daer

https://soundcloud.com/mochyn_daer/mochyn-daer-live-at-cosmic-render

Weaving together soundscapes of folk, ambient, found sound, drone, experimental, swampy bass and breakbeat, Welsh futurist Joni Lewis specialises in immersive live sets featuring gongs, bowls, bells, chimes and rocks, voice, clarinet, shruti, modular hardware and field recordings.

Organic and otherworldly sound rituals merge Welsh folk songs and stories with a wide variety of acoustic and electronic instruments, incantations and effects.

Outland Sea

https://samepagerecords.bandcamp.com/album/1

Outland Sea is an ambient drone experiment combining lap steel guitar, synthesis, found sounds, and folk woodwind. Shifting, generative rivulets furrow igneous dronescapes into shrouds of distorted particulate.

Mod Cog

https://soundcloud.com/modcog

Todmorden based Mod Cog goes electronic with a variety of analogue tapes, synths, samplers and effects to make some ultraterrestrial bleeps, bloops, bass and beats.

Improvised electronic drones, melodic grooves and deep subspace echoes make for a trippy journey to multi-dimensional space.

Spaceship Mark

https://www.instagram.com/spaceshipmark

Multi-instrumentalist Mark S. Williamson, musician, sound artist and educator based in Todmorden, creates an astonishingly wide soundscape from electronic to acoustic and orchestral instruments.

His work is often made in response to his environment, working on location, combining field recordings with electronic and acoustic instrumentation, usually recorded outside, amid the landscape and weather, and performs live with an amazing set of machines and devices.

adam

https://www.instagram.com/adam__res

adam creates a ceromonial set at 1pm to begin the happening, and also an analogue synthesis of drone, guitar and tape reflecting a gathering of warmth and embers later in the day.

Felix

Manchester based musician and dj (previously known as Agron) plays a set laden with drone and samples.
