An introduction to biofluorescent photography, sometimes known as Ultraviolet Induced Fluorescence or UVIF photography.

We will be covering all the specific tricks for photographing biofluorescence, from choosing the best lighting setup to managing exposure.

Learn how to take photos in low light conditions, what to do with or without a tripod, and how to use the darkness of the night to bring your photos to life.

Biofluorescence

From the skies above our heads to the ground below our feet, a secret world of glowing organisms surrounds us all, each and every day. Welcome to the world of biofluorescence, one of nature’s best-kept secrets.

Biofluorescence is the absorption of light at one wavelength followed by its reemission at a different wavelength. Shine the right type of UV light on the world, and it glows back at you in a vibrant display of colour.

Location: High Ash Farm

High Ash Farm is situated just 2 miles south of Norwich at Caistor St. Edmund in beautiful wooded and rolling countryside. Run by Daniel, Chris and Stephanie, it is a haven for wildlife with half the farm being set aside for wildlife crops. Chris Skinner's knowledge and understanding of nature has resulted in a wide variety of wildlife establishing healthy populations at High Ash.

Who is the session aimed at?

The Biofluorescent photography tour is aimed at anybody who has a very basic understanding of the manual controls on their DSLR camera right through to people who know how to use their camera and just want to experience a new world of photography. With professional guidance in a relaxed atmosphere throughout the workshop, you will learn about composition, how to take photos using the special UV torches, and more.

We recommend you bring along your own snacks and drinks. We can’t guarantee we will be near public toilets at times.

Please come prepared with warm clothing as the pace of the walk is slow. We recommend sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven (walking boots ideal, but trainers adequate) and wearing trousers to avoid stinging nettles. Safety glasses will be provided and must be worn throughout the walk for your protection.

Do I need a special camera to capture Images of Biofluorescence?

No! Capturing images of Biofluorescence also known as UVIF photography doesn’t require specially converted cameras or any fancy equipment. It works best when using a digital SLR / Mirrorless camera that is good in low-light conditions. UV light is not a bright light source and even with the best torches we have been able to find we are still shooting in the darkness and relatively low light conditions.
