How many medieval bridges are there in the Ribble Valley? In 2017 our speaker was approached by Clitheroe Civic Society to answer that very question. This presentation will provide you with an insight into the forensic approach taken to date masonry arch bridges and is underpinned by some interesting facts relating to local history, the development of the highway infrastructure and the principles of stone arch bridges.

Chris Hudson is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 20+ years industry experience.
Chris has operated as Client, Consultant and Contractor within a range of industry sectors and has fulfilled roles as a Highways Designer, Bridge Inspector & Bridge Maintenance Designer. Chris spent some time working for York City Council where he gained experience in respect to Historic Conservation aspects of Civil Engineering. He now works in the Rivers, Coastal Protection and Marine Sector of the industry for a Contractor called VolkerStevin based in Preston.
He is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and currently sits as Chairman for the North West of England. He has previously represented his Institution as Lancashire Branch Chair on two occasions. He also sits on the ICE North West Historic Engineering Group committee representing Lancashire & Cumbria.
Over the years Chris has delivered talks to public groups about Civil Engineering on a diverse range of topics such as Cumbrian Mine Sea Defences, Fleetwood Lighthouses, Preston Dock & Straightening of the Ribble and the link between Engineering, Science, the Environment and Art.
