After the success of last years’ first ever North East Sport Welfare event, we’re so excited to announce that we’ll be back at St James’ Park on Saturday 6th June for our second regional event!

Last year we were thrilled to be joined by over 100 sport volunteers from across 21 different sports and it was absolutely fantastic to see so many passionate volunteers from the North East learning, sharing ideas and connecting.

This year we’ll be joined by a new line up of inspirational key-note speakers and expert workshop deliverers to help increase your knowledge in a range of sport welfare topics.

We’re so pleased that Amjid Khazir (Media Cultured) will be kicking off the event with an insightful talk about how the power of sport promotes social unity, exploring how we can address Islamophobia, racism, and antisemitism through effective diversity education and safeguarding programmes. He’ll discuss the role sports organisations can play, the practical improvements they can make, and how national and local clubs can better equip their leaders, young people, and their wider communities drawing upon his work with England Hockey, the ECB, the Premier League, and the UN, including current challenges such as rage-bait and harmful online narratives.

We’ll then be joined by Clarke Carlisle, former Premier League footballer, award-winning broadcaster and advocate of mental health in sport as a proud ambassador for MIND and the Samaritans. Clarke will speak to us about his lived experience and challenges in mental health throughout his sporting career to present day and explore what we can do to support our members.

After lunch (provided) you will have the opportunity to attend two workshops delivered by local experts and we have an amazing line up for you to choose from including: safeguarding adults in sport; suicide prevention with If U Care Share; neurodiversity inclusion with Pools Youth Ladies FC; online harms and AI; using sport for social unity with Media Cultured; gambling harms in sport with Bet Know More; understanding eating distress in sport with Eating Distress North East; and child exploitation with NWG Network.

We’ll also have the opportunity to hear from sports clubs in the North East about the things they’re doing to create safer and more inclusive cultures at their clubs – what a day!

Please find the schedule for the day below:

8:30 – 9:30 Arrival, breakfast sandwiches (provided) and photo opportunity overlooking the stadium!
