RISE Travel Institute Carbon Literacy and Climate Justice Workshop for Travel and Tourism Professionals

Date: Monday, November 10th,  from 1-5pm EST; Wednesday, November 12th from 1-5pm EST (See time converted to your time zone here

What is the Carbon Literacy Workshop?

The Carbon Literacy and Climate Justice Workshop is an intensive, 2x4-hour, synchronous training focused on:

  • The science behind climate change
  • Its impact on us in general and on the travel and tourism industry
  • What is climate justice and how that relates to your work
  • What are ‘just’ climate actions and what you can do to mitigate the climate crisis
  • How to communicate effectively about climate change in both your personal and professsional lives

The Carbon Literacy Project, a charity based in the UK, is the accreditation and certification organization. RISE Travel Institute is an accredited training delivery organization. You can learn more about the Carbon Literacy Project here.

RISE will be the first organization in the North America to offer accredited Carbon Literacy training to the travel and tourism sector. Be amongst the first to receive this CLPxRISE Certificate!

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • Demonstrate a profound understanding of the climate crisis through evidence-based scientific knowledge and compelling storytelling.
  • Explain nuanced concepts such as carbon shadow, systems thinking, and climate justice beyond carbon accounting and measurement.
  • Analyze real-world examples from the travel and tourism industry to illustrate how the climate emergency affects communities, ecosystems, and travelers on both local and global scales.
  • Critically evaluate the effectiveness of existing climate adaptation initiatives and solutions through a justice lens.
  • Advocate for just climate solutions within your professional spheres and as conscientious travelers.
  • Communicate the complexities of the climate crisis with confidence to colleagues, partners, supply chains, travelers, and the communities you work with.

What to expect:

  • The workshop will NOT be recorded. Please plan to be fully present to gain the most from the experience—think of it like attending an in-person conference where you’re fully invested in the learning. Full attendance, active participation in every breakout room, and submission of your pledges at the end of the training are required to become Carbon Literate. (Note: If you anticipate needing to be away for an hour or more, we recommend joining a future cohort instead.)
  • You will complete an evidence form at the end of the course, where you’ll submit two climate action pledges: one individual and one group. Detailed instructions will be provided during the training.
  • You must submit your evidence form within 2 weeks of completing the course in order to receive certification. No extensions will be granted, as this is a requirement set by the Carbon Literacy Project.
  • Each day will include two short breaks and one 30-minute break in the middle of the session.
  • To participate fully, you’ll need stable Wi-Fi, a computer, and a second device (e.g., smartphone) for interactive activities.
  • No preparation is required in advance. Just come with an open mind, lots of curiosity, a collaborative mindset, and a genuine commmitment to just climate actions.

Join our inaugural cohort NOW!

This inaugural cohort will run in November 2025, in conjunction with Carbon Literacy Action Day (CLAD)—the world’s largest mass climate education event which unites thousands of people across sectors to participate in Carbon Literacy training and pledge climate action. While world leaders gather to negotiate on climate policy at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, with RISE Travel Institute, you will be on-the-ground learning, collaborating and becoming empowered to take the best action you can on climate change, wherever you are.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the training!
